    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at 1448 hours (2:48 P.M.), eleven companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three Battalion Command Officer Teams, and three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, under the direction of Assistant Chief John C. Ware, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 431 North Coronado Terrace in the Echo Park/Silver Lake area. First units on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of a two-story, sixteen unit apartment building. Firefighters entered the structure on the first floor where heavy smoke was emanating from one unit in the rear. Further investigation by Firefighter revealed that the fire was in the basement extending to the first floor. Using handlines, Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and confined the fire to the basement and the flooring, ceiling and the walls of one unit on the first floor. The fire was extinguished in one hour and three minutes. During Firefighting operations, one Firefighter suffered an eye injury and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in good condition. No other injuries were reported. As a result of the fire, approximately forty to fifty occupants of the apartment building were displaced and will be assisted by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is listed as under investigation and fire damage is estimated at $105,000. ($100,000 structure and $5,000 contents)
