LOS ANGELES, CA:
INJURY – CHEMICAL INVESTIGATION:
On Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 2001 Hours (8:01 PM PST), six Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters including a Hazardous Materials Task Force, seven LAFD Rescue Ambulances, an EMS Battalion Captain, and one Battalion Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of Assistant Chief Roxanne Bercik responded to an Injury incident with resultant Chemical Investigation at 111 East 109th Street in South Los Angeles. Members of the first arriving Company encountered an agitated female adult while attempting to gain access to a reportedly injured party within a single-family home. Standing at the front door, the woman threw or sprayed an unspecified substance on them and nearby Police Officers who had come to render assistance. As Firefighters stepped aside, several Los Angeles Police Officers entered the residence to subdue the woman and soon thereafter exited with complaints of nausea, vomiting, respiratory irritation and general malaise. None of the many Firefighters reported any symptoms. As the woman was taken into custody, LAFD Hazardous Materials experts surveyed the residence and residue, determining it to be from common household products. Later interviews with the five ill Police Officers raised the possibility that there may have been a discharge of pepper spray within the residence. The five Police Officers and adult female in question were taken to area hospitals in fair condition via LAFD Ambulance. No other injured civilians were discovered in the residence. Los Angeles Police officials will handle the investigation.
