Default Department of Homeland Paranoia, How may I help you?

From the CT brochure for the NFA Weekend:

    Attention applicants, DUE TO HIGHTENED
SECURITY WE ENCOURGE YOU TO USE BUS
TRANSPORTATION. In order to make your trip easier,
safer and more efficient the Connecticut Fire Academy would
like to increase the number of buses being used this year. If
you choose to drive your own / department vehicle we (CFA)
will not be responsible for any liability or infraction that may
occur. Why take the chance, ride the bus.
    WEAPONS
Any weapons that are carried onto NFA grounds will be
confiscated and will not be returned. The list of weapons
include but are not limited to firearms, knives including Gerber
/ Leatherman, Halligans, axes, bats, golf clubs etc
    . Anything
that could be used as a weapon including blunt objects will not
be allowed. If you choose to drive a department vehicle be
sure to strip all the “tools of the trade” items out of it!

Imagine someone who might actually dare drive on their grounds with a tire iron in their trunk!

I thought it was bad enough to push Leathermans, but come on, Golf Clubs? In a vehicle?

Is Emmittsburg the actual, "Secured, Undisclosed Location" Dick Cheney is banished to periodically?

What is the risk to national, or personal, security of someone having a set of golf clubs at a school for fire officers?

    Good frickin grief...

Hope they never have a fire. I wonder who would replace Emmitsburgs axes and halligans when they were done if they did

Do you think they've gone around and discharged all their fire extinguishers... I mean, they could be used as a weapon.... come to think of it, you could bash someone over the head with it so they've probably taken them right out.....

You know it gets out of line when they make sure all the trees on the grounds have their branches cut back so no-one could use them as a weapon either...

...however, I guess whoever does the landscaping probably isn't allowed to bring their axes or chainsaws....

OK. I searched the USFA/NFA/NETC websites, including the pre-course materials. The only word on weapons, anywhere on the website is this:
Campus Security: Due to heightened security requirements, please understand that you, your vehicle, or your luggage may be searched by security and law enforcement personnel. Maryland law is very narrow in its definition of Law Enforcement Officers who may carry firearms. For your own protection, and to expedite your processing into the NETC, do not bring any firearms to campus. Sworn and State POST certified officers and federal officers or local officers with concurrent jurisdiction who require a firearm for the performance of required official duties must obtain an exception from the Director of Support Services or the NETC Safety and Security Specialist prior to arrival on campus. For security information (only), please call (301) 447-1422; for general information, please call (301) 447-1000.
I suppose it is possible that they have instituted something new that didn't hit the website. Do you suppose there is a possibility that the "rule" was made up byu someone in your state?

Camp David is about 5 miles South of Emmittsburg in Thurmont.

It's certainly possible George, or someone taking a way overboard interpretation.

Actually, the problem lies under a Mountain about 6 miles west of Emmitsburg. Back when the Cold War was really heating up, (President JFK's Cuban Missle Crisis comes to mind) A top secret underground facility was constructed that would house the Pentagon Staff, and serve as headquarters of our military operations. Site R, as it is known, is still there, but largely vacant, so I'm told. And also, remember that Emmitsburg is host to much more than the NFA. FEMA has a lot of space at the academy for the National Emergency Training Center, and other things that would impact on the Security issue>

What makes them think that they can steal personal property? Especially firearms? Anything they don't want on the property they can give me a receipt for and I will pick it up at the gate on my way out. I could also pay to have it shipped home via UPS. But after many years around Police and Corrections work I can promise you that there is no way they can just take your stuff unless you just roll over and let them. Even the State Prisons I wroked and trained at didn't try this. They would put any 'contraband' items in a lock box and when you left you could give the ticket to the guard at the gate and they would hand you the items as you waited to leave.
Until I can find this posted on their website I will continue to be skeptical about it's origins. The notice posted by George seems to be the only thing officially on the website.

They don't want it there. You don't need it there. If you don't want it confiscated, leave it home! They are telling you this ahead of time so you Shouldn't have to worry about them "stealing" your stuff. It's their rule and their facility, if you don't agree, don't go.

I do think golf clubs being restricted is a bit excessive.

Twice last year in my area, people were beaten and sent to the local Trauma center. Weapon that was used? Golf clubs.

I agree that almost anything can be used as a weapon, but if everything that could possibly be used as a weapon was banned, would most events end up being a bunch of naked people sitting in an empty room? I think in most cases that in itself would be true terrorism for most involved!

    Harve,

Mt. Weather is the facility you are talking about. It's on the Loudoun/Clarke County Border in NW Virginia. It's mostly FEMA now, but apprently it's mostly underground and serves as a "Getaway" for Senate, Congress, Cabinet and other high level government officials. I guess it's kind of like a "Home away from Home" in case of an attack. They have a full-time Fire Department there that has two stations. One above ground and one under. Apparently it's like a city down there.

Sounds like the same facility anyaway....

Is it true that they make Missile Defense Systems Undergound at the Old Glenn Dale Hospital?....LOLLOL

I've been in that room. Don't knock it till you've tried it. Sounds like the beginning of a fun night. Throw down a few tarps and add a couple gallons of Wesson oil and I'm there. What happens in the room stays in the room.

This would be why they have begun banning items. We are talking about the National Fire Academy here.
