Question What's wrong with this picture?

I am sure this will stir a good discussion. But what can you see (if anything) wrong with this picture?

    A) Once the vent work is complete get off the roof and get reassigned
    B) Don't direct a hoseline into the vent opening....
    C) Don't write "BULL" in duct tape on your coat... :P

Because someone just may add four more letters!

Too many jakes on the roof!

Snow and ice on the roof, no roof ladder in use.

Capt. did you take that picture? Is that a flat roof? Is that part of a trench cut? What type of material is that roof made of? What type of building? Are there other pictures we can see?

Although CB is right, this is just one moment in this operation, it is however, the moment that we are critiquing so I will agree with what has been written so far:

Cut your hole and get off the roof, don't stand up there admiring your work.

Don't squirt water into the vent hole, you may find the interior crew waiting for you when you get down off the roof and they won't be happy.

Working on a snow covered peaked roof without a roofer is probably going to end up with you doing an Art Griswold "Christmas Vacation" imitation.

And yes, never write BULL on your coat in duct tape, you're just asking for trouble

Good call, Noz. Let's send all photos to you for dialogue enhancement!

One other question... who's the firefighter taking the shot? I would hope it is because the public shouldn't be witnessing this!

ATTETION ALL MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKS AND BACKSEAT DRIVERS PLEASE REPORT TO THE "WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE THREAD."

Yah............ because we know exactly what was going on there on that roof top now dont we????

Will all of you that have not let loose with a stream down a vent hole, or neglected to use a roof ladder or stood for a minute or two lookin at the bright stuffplease raise your hands..................just as I thought.

Looks as if he aint really sprayin in the hole but in fact is clearing and setting his pattern. Also I do believe that the IFSTA book calls for a nozzle on the roof.

A fine time to be clearing the nozzle and setting a pattern...AFTER the job is done.

    Exclamation

You know, I'm sort of torn about threads like these.

Is it good to show real examples of what NOT to do? I think so. Sometimes, the best way to change incorrect behavior is to seem somebody else doing it. Is it okay to critique pictures like this? Yes, I think it is. Why? Because take the picture at the top of this thread for example. There are people on these boards right now that would not know what's wrong with that picture. That is unfortunate, but it's the truth. My hope is that they stumble by and learn something.

The excuse that a photo only captures one moment in time doesn't really fly with me. It only takes one moment of doing the wrong thing for guys to get hurt.

On the other hand, however, I hate threads like this... because 99% of the people that respond are from "perfect" departments. Not only do they point out the failures of the firefighters in the photos, but they do so with an attitude that implies that jakes in their own FD would never do the same. And that, of course, is nonsense.

Let's keep critiquing photos. However, let's be realistic when we do.

    Realism...

OK, I'm game for adding some realism to this.

If it was my department one of two scenarios would have been occuring:
ONE: the lone dude/dudette on the ladder truck would have been up there cutting the roof himself/herself. She/He would have hopefully pulled the roof ladder off of the side of the aerial bed section. There would be no hoseline up there as she/he had to get the saw, the roof ladder and the pike pole up there along with connecting his/her ladder belt and safety lanyard.
TWO: Maybe 10 or 15 minutes into the incident the off-duty members would have arrived to handle the chore. And if we were lucky 2 or 3 members would have come back to do the task.

IFSTA can call for what ever it wants but as you said reality usually wins out and reality in my city is 7 personnel running 4 units. Do your best as safely as humanly possible (this job after all is inherently dangerous)

MOTOWN, you say we are Monday morning quarterbacking and then you claim to know "that in reality the guy is adjusting the stream". Unless your there you are doing the same thing we are so spare me the lecture.

    FiRsqDvr45,

Nope I was looking at the pic and using that little part of my brain called common sense. Look at the hole (that would be the thingy with the bright sparkly stuff belching from it) now look at the homeboy squirting the hose line (the long cotton thingy with an funny looking squirty thingy attached to the end of it) do the angles line up???? No.

If I wanted to give you a lecture I would.

I made an observation that was free of all critical statements you will notice that my response to you is laced with critical statements.

ATTETION ALL MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKS AND BACKSEAT DRIVERS PLEASE REPORT TO THE "WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE THREAD."
The whole point to this thread was in relation to safety. How many people does it take to open a roof on a building that size? And when you are done...get off the roof. And the roof is snow covered, perhaps suggesting the need for a roof ladder even though it is only slightly pitched.

Yah............ because we know exactly what was going on there on that roof top now dont we????
Not much when most of the pics were taken.

Will all of you that have not let loose with a stream down a vent hole, or neglected to use a roof ladder or stood for a minute or two lookin at the bright stuffplease raise your hands..................just as I thought.
I can honestly say I have never done it unless the building has been cleared and I am instructed to do so at that point. Could that be the case here? Sure it could..but if conditions have deteriorated to that point do we need all those people on the roof and why not use the aerial to do it?

The excuse that a photo only captures one moment in time doesn't really fly with me. It only takes one moment of doing the wrong thing for guys to get hurt.

Nope not buying it, the thread topic title alone tells us that you are already starting the "lets take a moment to bash someone" attitude.

How many people does it take to open a roof on a building that size?
Depends- are they doing a trench cut? Or better yet, are they doing book end cuts to section off that part of the building?

    That's Clark Griswold...

They are prolly auditioning for a TV news program where you see three guys jumping, while one guy fall through...
