LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1940 Hours (7:40 PM PST), fourteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance, two LAFD Helicopters, one Company of Los Angeles County Firefighters and three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Roderick Garcia responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire near 14021 West Olive View Drive in Sylmar. On alert due to high winds, the first of several Companies arrived on scene of a reported brush fire on the grounds of the LA County Olive View – UCLA Medical Center to instead discover a remote and abandoned one-story outbuilding well involved with fire. The 50’ x 250’ un-reinforced masonry structure, surrounded by tinder-dry brush, was located in a remote eastern portion of the expansive hospital grounds, and had been abandoned since the Sylmar earthquake devastated the region exactly 33 years ago to the day. The building’s red tile roof showed signs of fatigue on Firefighters arrival, and soon thereafter failed, collapsing into the structure and forcing Firefighters to make a well-coordinated transition to defensive firefighting tactics. One LAFD Helicopter provided a tactical water drop as the other Fire Department airship served as Command Support, scouting the area for wind-whipped embers. Firefighters using handlines and heavy streams confined the fire to the structure and fully extinguished the flames in just 71 minutes. There were no injuries. Monetary loss from the fire is negligible, as the structure had been long abandoned. The cause of the fire is categorized as under investigation.
