Deputy Chief- White
Asst. Chief- White
Captain- White
Lieutenant- White
Sergeant- White
Firefighter- Yellow or Black
EMS Only- Blue
Probationary- Red

Chiefs and Deputy Chiefs wear White Coats. Assistant Chiefs can wear the normal colored coat or a White one. We have Globe or Securitex Tan PBI Gear.
Line Officers can also wear Black Helmets with White frontise pieces. Leather Helmets are widely worn and alot of people wear the BenII (Crap) and the Cairns 1000 or 1010 Classic. The County issues the Salad Bowl Metro 660C.

Our system works well i think is relatively simply.
All of our Officers wear white helmets with white coats with thier rank on the back of their coat along with department name.
Our regular firefighters wear black helmets.
Our probationary members wear yellow helmets.
Our cadet members wear green helmets.
Our driver/operators have a red reflective striping on the back of their black helmets to indicate them being a driver/operator.
And our EMT's have a blue reflective striping on thier black helmets to identify them as EMT's. They also wear blue suspenders as well.

Way it used to be...
Chiefs - White helmets
Capts/Lt's - Yellow helmets
Engineers - Red helmets
FF's - Black helmets
Now...
Company #1 stayed with Way it used to be...
Company #2 went to all black helmets but colored shields. The colored shield follows old way pattern and it works fine when it's nice and clear and you are looking at a guy from the front. When you look from the back...who knows who is what.
Not really happy with their setup, but changing it is like arguing with a brick wall.

Try this...
This subject has come up enough. Rather than me
telling you what my department has, etc, etc. It
sounds like you are looking for a system for
numerous positions/jobs.
Please let me suggest the magnet panel system for
your existing helmets. You can make any type of
phrase or position on the side of your helmet then
switch it out as needed.
Like "RIC", "IC" or "SAFETY". Here is the link
below to give you an idea.

Our system is fairly easy.
Chief: white
Lt: red
Capt: yellow
FF: black
All of these are leather
Explorers use black plastic with the appropriate crescents.
We use vests for safety officer, IC, information officer, etc…

Chiefs- White helmet with White/Black Helmet Shield
Captains- Red Helmet with Orange/White Helmet Shield
Lieutenants- Yellow Helmet with White/Orange Helmet Shield
Firefighters- Yellow Helmets with Orange/White Helmet Shields
Apprentices have no rockers on Helmet.
FoxFireman109 you should consult the Seattle Fire System, they did a lot of research after an incident in accountibility. Everything is pulled together. Most of Washington State does it, has for years.

Volunteer - All helmets have yellow reflective tape around base:
Captain - Red Helmet w/ Yellow "Captain" arc
Leuitennant - Yellow Helmet w/ Green "Leuitennant" arc
Firefighter - Yellow Helmet
Career - All helmets have white reflective tape around base:
Fire Officer - Red Helmet w/ white "Fire Officer" arc
Leading Firefighter - Yellow helmet w/ 3 red chevrons on side
Qualified Firefighter - Yellow helmet w/ 1 red chevron
Firefighter - Yellow helmet
All ranks above this "Day to day" level use white helmets with red arc's denoting their rank. The reflective tape around the base of the helmet will still change in accordance to whether they are staff or volunteer positions.
Additionally, placed on each side of your helmet are your PPE certification and first-aid certification.
No markings means no certs.
BA - Means Breathing Aparatus only
PE - Protective Equipment (Splash suits and Gas Suits)
HA - Hazmat
Green first aid cross - First aid qualified
With the PPE certs you only ever have one on your helmet, as PE requires BA and HA requires PE. You don't end up having the whole alphabet on the side of your head...

Chief- White
Deputy Chief- White
Captain- Red
Lt's- Red
FF's cleared to enter- Black
Rookies- Yellow
Some of our FF's cleared still have the yellow helmets because anyone with black bought them personally. (More of a pride thing) The chief has been debating on issuing Black for anyone cleared because almost everyone who's cleared has them, but it hasn't gone through.Scott Maples
