    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at 2214 Hours (10:14 PM PST), Twelve Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and four Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of 9th Battalion Commander Dennis Waters responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 1209 South Amherst Avenue in Brentwood. The first Company to arrive reported heavy fire showing to the rear of a three-story apartment building over parking with flames threatening a four-story apartment building to the west. Firefighters with handlines navigated the serpentine stairways of the involved building to aggressively attack the blaze, which involved two rooms within a single apartment on the westernmost portion of the non fire-sprinklered structure. During this rapid access and initial attack phase, Firefighters encountered an elderly couple, including a critically injured male in his 80ís who had sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns to nearly 30% of his body, and his female companion, also 80, who was uninjured. Paramedics treated the man and offered comfort and reassurance to the woman while transporting them both the nearby UCLA Medical Center in Westwood. The fire was confined to the living area of the apartment and extinguished in just 22 minutes. Though one or more Smoke Alarms was present inside the apartment, their functional status and possible impact could not be immediately determined. Loss from the fire is estimated at $150,000 ($100,000 structure & $50,000 contents). The cause of this blaze remains under active investigation.
