Funeral Info re: Lt. Brenda Cowan, LFD (The Secret list)
Funeral arrangements for Lexington, Ky Fire Lieutenant Brenda Cowan, killed in the line of duty Friday, are as follows: Visitation and funeral will be at Consolidated Baptist Church on Russell Cave Road. Take I-75 to the North Broadway Exit (#113)-go right at the light and follow to New Circle Road, make a right and go to Russell Cave Road. The Church is off that intersection.
Visitation will be from 1700 to 2100 on Tuesday and from 1000 to 1200 on Wednesday. The funeral will be at 1200. It will be a Fire Department Funeral. Although burial will be out of town on Thursday, the Lexington FD is working on plans for a processional to allow the community the opportunity to pay their respects. Burial will be in Madisonville, Kentucky on Thursday. The current understanding at this time is that this part will be more of a private family time. A few friends of ours from LFD wrote us about Lt. Cowan... and made it real clear that she was truly a fantastic firefighter, the very positive impressions left by the news clips are correct, she was truly "one of the crew." No one thought of her as anything other than a top notch Firefighter,
and was well respected and trusted by the members and her chain of command. The media labeled her as a pioneer, but they say she would never have thought of herself that way, she was thrilled to be a firefighter, and truly loved the job. A tragic loss.
Go to: http://www.iaff526.org for additional details and related directions which will be posted as they are finalized.
Note also that Firefighter Jim Sandford is recovering from the gunshot wound he suffered at that same scene on Friday. Firefighter Sandford is an 11 year veteran of the Lexington F.D. He was injured while trying to aid a female citizen who was shot Friday afternoon. Jim formerly served as President of Local 526. As always, we wish Jim a swift recovery and the best to his family as well as the members of the Lexington F.D. Several LFD members are on The Secret List and we have become friends over the years.
The LFD is a top notch and very professional FD that has been through tragic events like this before. In 1997 FF Chuck Williams of E-6 was killed while operating at a structure fire when the floor collapsed... and in 1986, FF Robert Martin fell from E-1 while responding to a structure fire and suffered fatal head injuries.
***NOTE ALSO: As Firefighters, we are constantly finding ourselves in risky and potentially dangerous situations... be it while enroute or on a scene. Response to any run can turn bad quickly. A few of you wrote asking about SOP's for any FD regarding response to potential violent or domestic situations. As always, we try to pass on related info to further focus on the mission of "everyone coming home"...At our home page ( http://www.FirefighterCloseCalls.Com ) we have an SOP/SOG section. Here is one site from there that you can check out for a "sample" policy for your departments consideration: http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/FIRE/20512.html .
