Bravest killed in motorcycle wreck
An off-duty city firefighter died on Valentine's Day when he lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into a tree near his Long Island home, authorities said yesterday.
Firefighter Juan Flores, 37, of East Patchogue, was riding his Suzuki motorcycle south on Haig Ave. when he jumped a curb and hit a tree about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Flores, who joined the FDNY in 1998, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said."This hits you like a ton of bricks," said Capt. Matt Nelson of Ladder 151 in Queens, where Flores worked."He was really into motorcycles," Nelson said, adding that Flores was a member of the New York City Fire Riders motorcycle club and often rode his bike to the firehouse."He was a great guy, an intense guy," Nelson said. "He really loved the job and gave it his all. Whatever he did, he did to the fullest."
Flores joined Ladder 151 on Queens Blvd. and 75th Ave. last May after the city closed Engine 261 in Long Island City, where he had been assigned, an FDNY spokesman said.Flores' family could not be reached yesterday, but firefighters said he was a father.
Suffolk County police were investigating the cause of the fatal crash and asked witnesses to call detectives at (631) 854-8552.
