LOS ANGELES, CA:
CHEMICAL ODOR INVESTIGATION:
On Monday, February 16, 2004 at 1137 Hours (11:37 AM PST) five Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters including a Hazardous Materials Task Force, six LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and one Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of Assistant Chief Roderick Garcia responded to a Chemical Odor Investigation at the Granada Hills Town Center In-Store Branch of Wells Fargo Bank at 18010 West Chatsworth Street in Granada Hills. The first Company to arrive was directed to the entrance of a Ralph’s Supermarket, in which the satellite banking facility was located. Taking a position uphill and upwind, Firefighters cordoned off the immediate area while identifying eleven persons who became acutely have been exposed to a noxious odor. Each of the eleven adults complained of respiratory irritation and stinging eyes, with symptoms subsiding upon exposure to fresh air. Utilizing sophisticated instruments, LAFD Hazardous Materials experts thoroughly examined the large store and determined that no acutely toxic substance was present. A 23 year-old female banker who reportedly fainted after holding her breath while running from the building, was later transported to the Northridge Hospital Medical Center in good condition. All other occupants were released at the scene following a medical assessment. The cause of the offensive odor is surmised to have been an accidental release of a non-specified chemical irritant, which dissipated prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. At the completion of Fire Department operations, which included ventilation of the structure, control of the site was returned to building and business officials.
