Default How does your dept. handle "truck work"?

Same scenario as last poll, a 2 story single family dwelling fire. Time of day is 10:00 PM so those from volunteer or POC departments can assume you have maximum staffing.

Truck work (or "Fireground Support Operations" as IFSTA now calls it) is what is defined by the acronym LOUVERS: Laddering, Overhaul, Utilities control, Ventilation, Entry (forcible),Rescue (and search) and Salvage.

My department's Squad usually accomplishes most of these tasks. Sometimes a crew from the second due engine will perform some of them. We do not have an SOG for truck work and it seems like occasionally some of these duties are forgotten about.

    Questions:
Does your department's Truck Company (or Squad Company if you don't have an aerial apparatus) respond to every structure fire, regardless of the type of building?

Does your Truck (or Squad) handle all of the "truck work" or are these duties assigned to a crew from any apparatus as they are needed?

Does your department have an SOG/SOP for truck work?

On my paid days, the truck companies do the LOUVERS.

You said it all as far as our WTFD ops go, but I dont have a problem assigning any rig truck duties not just our squad, it depends on the situation.

We have 2-3 guys assigned to our Truck, but our 2 newer engines are equipped as Squads. The Truckies start truck work, then incoming trucks and POC people will help fill the slots. Int he end the work gets done.

carrigan, maybe you use different terminology in your department.

By "Truck" I meant an aerial ladder apparatus and by "Squad" I meant a heavy rescue squad not an ambulance.

How did I miss this thread????????

Our "aerial" (It's not an aerial. It's a worthless 50' Telesuirt) only seats 2 people so it's usually an engine crew that does the Truck work. A lot of it depends on what apparatus gets there when. If it's on the west end, our Engine is going to start attack and Rossford will usually get there with their tower and would most likely be taskjed with truck work. If our Station #2 gets there with their engine before Rossford, they would probably be tasked with it..

    Default Very interesting

My FT department has a 2002 100' Sutphen, nice truck. Ideal for truck work, has all new equipment also. To bad it hasn't seen a fire yet, nto for the lack of having them: just doesn't roll.

So our truck work is done by engine crews, or a tele squrt(ours carries 4 people). That squrt that only carries 2 people is pretty worthlees, maybe it needs replaced!!! Does that one have a wheat light on it also????

It needs replaced, but our lovely city leaders can't make a decision about a new station for us, since a new one won't fit in our currebt station!!!!!!!! And yes, it has 1 very dim wheat light on it.....

One of our Captains and I came up with what we think is a better acronym for truck work than LOUVERS:

    LIVES

    Laddering
Interior Ops(Forcible entry, Search & rescue)
    Ventilation
    Extension (& overhaul)
    Salvage

We thought this was more in line with usual fireground priorities than LOUVERS is.

Plus you can teach it with the phrase "Truckies save LIVES"
