KANSAS CITY, MO: Working fire at 142 Cypress x St John. Heavy fire showing from attic of a 2.5 story frame house. Car104 P23 P24 R12 T3 T10 [KCFN-02] 9:18 pm

Update on Monday's (02/23/04) Kansas City, MO fires/shooting

Kansas City, MO Police Dept has called off the search of a suspect who opened fire on police, firefighters and paramedics on the scene of two house explosions. Investigators have recovered a body in the rubble from the fires, but have not yet determined if it is of Donin Wright, the home's owner and suspect of Monday's shooting rampage.

Mary Seymour, 39, has been upgraded from critical to fair condition after having been shot twice in the chest at the beginning of the incident. Seymour is a 15-year veteran paramedic with the Metropolitan Ambulance Service Trust, the primary ALS/BLS provider for the Kansas City Metropolitan area.

Six firefighters who were the first to respond to the fires received citations yesterday for their role in rescuing Paramedic Seymour in the volley of gunfire. No firefighters themselves were injured in the incident.

Pumpers 30, 37 and 42, and Truck 15 sustained considerable gunfire damage during the shooting. However Truck 15, a 2002 E-One Cyclone II 95-foot aerial truck, was so severely damaged in the incident that fire officials have determined the apparatus as unsalvageable. The three other pumpers are currently out of service until they can undergo repairs, in the meantime the city's entire reserve fleet has been placed in service to replace the damaged apparatus.
