Default Have you ever seen a chief with black gear?

Just got hired at a new department, and started this week. One of the biggest surprises I saw this week is that the chief has black gear. I've never seen or heard of that before. Have any of you?

I forgot to add that everyone else on the dept. wears tan gear, regardless of rank.

My chief wears a black helmet. The reason for this is because our former chief was a real dill hole. He wore a white helmet. Current chief wants to be as far away from there as possible...hence the black helmet.

If you are the chief I bet you can were what you want, We follow a countywide helmet code so the black helmet for the chief would be out of the question...But If the chief wants to were black gear....Who's going to stop him??

What is the outer shell of you gear made out of? That's the most likely reason white hats not having white coats. The only material that I know of avalible in white is nomax. All of your modern fabrics, (PBI, advance and fusion being the most popular) are not availible in white.

Most departments (including mine) have gotten away from nomax because it breaks down easier than the others mentioned.

Haven't seen it out here, but then, you don't see black gear out here very much. Have seen it elsewhere in the country though, but not usually unless the rest of the department wears black too.

To echo what Weruj and Moose said, our Chief wears the same turnouts as everyone else, but he and the BCs do have white helmets. Captains' are red, FFs/Engineers' are yellow.

All of our Chief's look like the Michelin (SP) man.... They where all white gear and white helmets. Most of them either wanted to keep all tan gear like everyone else or at least keep tan pants, but City Chief said no,,,,,,,,,,,

Our helmet colors are Yellow for Firefighters, Orange for Lt’s and Red for Capts, White is used for Chief Officers.

Our Chiefs have white coats and helmets but have the same tan bunker pants as everybody else on the dept. They won't win any awards at the fireground fashion show but then again, they should have more important things to worry about than what they look like, right?

    Exclamation

The only reasons that fire department puts chief officer's in white gear is for them to stand out. This may be of some great importance in the large departments. FDNY uses black gear for its chiefs. The helmet is white.

My department had the chiefs in black gear and white helmets for years. Only the fire chief had all white gear. Now all chief officers wear all white. Since they are purly command officers, and stay on the outside, the gear doesn't get nasty like the members fighting the fire does. They first complained that they would get the gear dirty by wearing white. Just the same thing they said when we put them in white shirts. They will get dirty. I change my uniform daily and have on occasions changed several times during the tour.

There is nothing wrong with everyone in the department wearing the same gear and color as the everyone else does. Our last chief of department worn tan gear like everyone else did.

Stay Safe and Well out there..........

I'm still trying to picture a Chief actually wearing turnout gear.

All our newer gear is tan, our older gear is yellow. Generally the rookies get the older yellow gear (which is only going to last until we can replace it with tan PBI).

    Our helmets:

Chief - white with white frontpiece
    Deputy - white with red
    Captain - red with red
    Lieutenant - red with yellow
    Firefighter 1 (NFPA 1001 cert'd) - yellow with red
Firefighter 2 and 3 (pump operators, various other training) - yellow with yellow
Firefighter 4 (basic training) - yellow with green
    Probationary/rookie - yellow with black

This way, anyone can take a quick look at a member and determine their level of training.

There's another department near here that used to exclusively use red helmets .. one time I came up to one of them and asked for the plan of attack.. he had no clue.. turns out I was talking to a guy with 3 weeks on the department.

Oh, and my first thought upon reading this title was someone complaining that their chief's gear never gets dirty.

I am the chief of the volly FD I am a member of. I have always worn the same color gear as the firefighters on this FD, black. My helmet is also black as is my A/C's. LT's wear yellow, Captains wear red, firefighters wear black.

Why do I wear black? Just a personal choice I guess. The FF's on this FD know that I am the chief, our mutual aid companies know I am the chief, so the need for white is not necessary. Also, strictly from a cost savings standpoint, I am elected as chief, if we buy white gear for me and in a year I am voted out will that gear fit the next guy or do we have to buy another set of white? My helmet front designates my position.
