NO...at first yes but now no...When the program first came out in 2000 we had an enclosed cab truck which was ok but the other 3 Engines and Ladder Truck all had open cabs, which meant 1 Explorer Per Truck with the exception of ours we were allowed 2 guys inside the enclosed cab. Like you when we sat in the open jumpseat we were to be seatbelted etc..but now that there was a misunderstanding between an explorer and a Firefighter while en route to a call they were banned from riding open jumpseats. So now it is either you sit up front or you dont ride at all. Its good for the explorers now because we now are starting to phase out our open jumpseat apparatus and now have 2 Enclosed cab engines. Working on the other 3 pieces of apparatus.

Our two pumpers are enclosed cabs.
Our Rescue is what looks like a bread truck with the 2 doors on the side and the 2 doors on the rear of the truck. any member can stand in the doorway of the right front door as long as the door is closed. This helps with sight.
Back when we had open cabs, juniors were allowed to ride.Firefighter, Volunteering since Oct 2001

We don't have explorers anymore but no.....we do not allow Rookie firefighter w/o a badge and FF card to even ride in an engine or ladder. They have to Ride in the Ambulance.

Yes, but on the officers discretion. If he doesn't feel comfortable with the explorer riding open cab then he/she cannot. Personally I wouldn't allow them too unless I trusted them. We only have one rig that is open cab and that is our "Last Resort" reserve engine. It has safety bars on it.

In my dept. we are not allowed to ride appuratus to fire calls unless its a non emergency responce or were out training when we recieve the call. but we are allowed to ride on any open seat on the trucks for training and to return from calls. we have an engine and our ladder each have 2 jump seats and i love riding in um.

Jump seats have never been an issue. All have seatbelts and we have considered that good enough. We only have one rig with mantraps installed. Explorers can’t (or very rarely) ride in the rigs with fully enclosed cabs as they are our first due whatever.

How do they as new/Cadet Firefighters learn anything if they get stuck in the band-aide box ? If a seat is open they should be given the chance to step up...Originally posted by ff7134

We do not have open jump seats. But as far as open cabs go, we do have one, that we can ride in.
