LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Tuesday, March 09, 2004 at 1734 Hours (5:34 PM PST), nine Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, seven LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and two Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 223 North Oxford Avenue near Koreatown. The first Company to arrive reported heavy smoke showing from both floors of a 78 year-old two-story wood frame converted hotel now serving as residential care center for adults with developmental disabilities. With great finesse and celerity, Firefighters with ground ladders expertly assisted seven adults hanging precariously from upper floor windows on the north side of the smoke-charged 11,708 square foot building. A deft and aggressive interior assault on the fire by their colleagues using handlines quickly confined the flames to the spartan contents of one vacant first floor unit undergoing renovation. The fire was extinguished in just nine minutes. A thirty-five year-old female resident sustained smoke inhalation and was transported to Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center is fair condition. The skilful fire attack, smoke control and salvage efforts by Firefighters prevented damage to the other 35 living units within the building, allowing the 48 other residents to remain. Loss from the fire is estimated at $2,000 ($1,000 structure & $1,000 contents). The cause of this early evening blaze remains categorized as under active investigation.
