Prospect firefighter dies during training exercise
    March 13, 2004
    Associated Press

PROSPECT, Conn. -- A Prospect firefighter died of cardiac arrest during a routine training exercise on Saturday.

Robert Griffin, 38, collapsed while crawling through a trailer set up as a mock house at Wolcott State Fire School, Prospect Fire Chief Robert Chatfield told WVIT-TV. No fire was used, he said.

It was the first death during a training exercise, Chatfield said.

"We've had some injuries while training, this and that, but nothing this serious," Chatfield said.

Griffin was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury with cardiac arrest cited as the cause of death, WVIT reported.

    An autopsy is pending.

    Prospect firefighter dies during training

(Prospect-WTNH, Mar. 14, 2004 6:00 PM) _ Plans are underway in Prospect to pay tribute to a firefighter who died during a training exercise this weekend.

38 year old Robert Griffin, known as Rob to his friends passed away from a heart attack during a fire drill. He was a member of the Prospect Fire Department and you can see that they have the fire station draped in black and the flags at half staff in his memory. The fire chief had to call together fellow firefighters and tell them they lost one of their own.

"He will be sorely missed by everyone. I had a briefing up here yesterday afternoon and told them exactly what had happened," says Chief Robert Chatfield, Prospect Fire Dept.

An empty car sits alone at fire headquarters where he left it before heading off to his drill. It's next to the flags and a granite stone that remembers those who died before him in the line of duty.

"What kind of a guy was he?"
"Happy go lucky, eager to learn. Rob would come all day and ask questions."

Griffin was drilling at the state training facility in Wolcott Saturday afternoon. He had been on the department for a little more than a month as was completing a required test when he collapsed.

"He was in a maze, it was a box trailer, and there were simulated rooms, and he was moving in and out on his hands and knees crawling through the maze. They had to do that twice a day once in the afternoon and once in the morning, he was stricken when he was almost finished.

Robert Griffin leaves behind a wife and two children. An autopsy will be performed later this week.

PROSPECT, Conn. (AP) - The chief medical examiner's office will
try to determine Monday why a 38-year-old firefighter died during
training at Wolcott Regional Fire School.
The office said an autopsy was planned for Monday. Broadcast
reports said Robert Griffin suffered cardiac arrest Saturday and
was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury.
Griffin was the first firefighter in the 60-year history of the
Prospect Volunteer Fire Department to die in the line of duty. He
had been with the department five weeks.
He left behind a wife and two daughters, ages 6 and 9.
Authorities said Griffin collapsed Saturday afternoon while
training in a trailer filled with smoke and obstacles. The exercise
is designed to simulate real fire conditions.
Griffin, of Prospect, completed the maze one previous time
Saturday before collapsing near the end of his second try, fellow
    firefighters said.
About 30 firefighters from Brookfield, Cheshire, Naugatuck,
Terryville, and Wolcott were training at the school Saturday, the
    Sunday Republican of Waterbury reported.
"He was on his last 10 feet of maze, when I guess he signaled,
or his partner asked if he was OK, and he said no'," said Jackie
Wahl, a firefighter who trained with Griffin on Saturday.
His training partner, who is from a different fire department,
then shook Griffin's boot heel, only to get no response.
Paramedics, always present during training, rushed to his aid but
    could not revive him.
Griffin had been laid off from a factory job and decided to
volunteer at the department, his uncle, Prospect Fire Marshal Keith
    Griffin, said.
