*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Sunday, March 14, 2004 at 1004 Hours (10:04 AM PST), eleven Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and three Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of 14th Battalion Commander Evan Williams responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 9023 North Sepulveda Boulevard in North Hills. The first Company to arrive reported heavy smoke showing from a 35’ x 100’ one-story commercial building of cinder block construction. Firefighters quickly laddered the building and began strategic vertical ventilation on the conventional flat roof, while their colleagues below made swift and well-trained use of power saws and hand tools to perform forcible entry through the rolling steel doors securing “Roberto’s Tire and Electric”, an automotive repair firm. Handlines were simultaneously brought to bear upon the flames, which had spread to two of four automotive bays, a tire rack and attic area while threatening an interior office. The skilful combination of fireground tactics prevented the fire’s further spread, and allowed Firefighters to extinguish the flames in just 21 minutes. There were no injuries. Loss from the fire is estimated at $75,000 ($25,000 structure & $50,000 contents). The cause of the fire is categorized as accidental and is attributed to an electrical malfunction of automotive diagnostic equipment.
