Heroic Rescue From Tanker Fire
Mar. 17, 2004
Quick-acting Highway Patrol troopers and some witnesses today saved a truck driver.
Check out this UHP dash cam video of the burning semi on I-215.
Troopers and motorists broke the windshield and pulled out Kenneth Darger as the fire moved toward the cab.
Michael Persinger: "VERY QUICKLY, THE UNDERSIDE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND A FEW SECONDS LATER, THERE WAS A LOUD SHOT, ALMOST SOUNDED LIKE A GUNFIRE, A SMALL EXPLOSION."
Guy Hood: "YOU COULD JUST LOOK IN HIS EYES AND SEE THE FEAR AND HE PROBABLY FELT THE HEAT ON HIS BACK AS WE WERE TRYING TO HELP HIM OUT."
Crews doused the fire and spilled fuel with foam.
Westbound 215 was closed for 4 and a half hours.
The driver suffered serious back and head injuries...and will be cited for speeding.
