PHOENIX (AP) - One man was killed Tuesday morning when the
single-engine air tanker he was in crashed east of Safford, Bureau
of Land Management officials said.
The man, who was a student at the BLM's pilot academy, was
training to fight wildfires, said BLM spokeswoman Diane Drobka.
The man, who was not identified, was not a BLM employee, Drobka
said.
The academy was shut down pending results of the investigation,
she said.
Ground and air emergency medical services were en route to crash
site, said BLM spokeswoman Deborah Stevens.
Federal Aviation Administration officials and the National
Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the cause of the
crash, Drobka said.
