Post Four Albuquerque firefighters booted off force

(Albuquerque-AP) -- The Albuquerque Fire Department has fired
four firefighters accused of padding their time cards.
They're accused of conspiring with a department record-keeper to
bilk the department out of about 13-thousand dollars in vacation
    and sick time.
Fire Chief Robert Ortega says the civilian employee faces an
administrative hearing to determine whether she'll be fired.
He says the employee is accused of failing to deduct sick and
vacation time from the four firefighters as they took large amounts
    of time off with pay.
Ortega says that between March 2003 and this month, the four
firefighters took of 987 hours -- 209 in sick time and 778 in
vacation -- and were paid a total of 13-thousand dollars.
Ortega declines to release the names of the firefighters (fired
March 12th) and the civilian employee.

    Default Ugh...

Why do we keep getting this kind of bad press?
Folks, please, no one is perfect, but from drinking
to fraud, the fire service as a whole need to try
to curb this type of stuff.

Maybe in the future, if you or a co-worker might
be "getting side ways", please recommend getting
help or a councilor. Something, anything to avoid
    this kind of spot light...

I completely agree, brothers helping brothers is the way to go. Maybe we can help each other to change before it becomes front page fodder.

Is that literal?? Does anyone have timecards and have to punch in and out? I've never heard of a FD that does, but I sure don't claim to know everything about everywhere.

    Post More details............

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A civilian record keeper has resigned after
being accused of helping four Albuquerque firefighters falsify
their timecards, costing the city an estimated $13,000.
The woman, who had been with the Albuquerque Fire Department a
decade, quit Tuesday, fire Capt. Gil Santistevan said. She was to
appear Tuesday before an administrative hearing but quit
    beforehand, he said.
The department announced Monday that the firefighters accused of
exploiting paid leave had been fired March 12. Officials said the
record keeper had been in a relationship with one of them.
The names of the five were not released.
The department began investigating in late February after a
field commander told Fire Chief Robert Ortega he'd noticed several
people had taken an inordinate amount of time off.
Ortega has alleged the record keeper did not deduct sick time
and vacation time from the firefighters although they took large
amounts of time off with pay. Between March 2003 and this month,
the men took off 987 hours - 209 in sick time and 778 in vacation -
and were paid a total of $13,000 for it, he has said.
The Albuquerque Police Department is investigating and will send
its report to the district attorney's office.
