LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 1626 Hours (4:26 PM PST), thirteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and three Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of 17th Battalion Commander Mark Jones responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 5731 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Woodland Hills. The first Company to arrive reported a large complex of two story five-unit attached town homes with smoke showing from the center section of one remote and difficult to access building. Firefighters adeptly laddered the building and began ventilation of superheated gases trapped by the wood shingled roof while firefighting handlines were extended to battle flames within the common walls and attic of the wood frame structure. A conscientious and well-coordinated salvage effort by teams of Firefighters protected many valuables and severely limited damage to permanent fixtures and furnishings. With stubborn flames extending both up and down the wall from the second floor, Firefighters made swift and strategic use of power and hand tools to gain access to voids and stem the fireís progress. The blaze was extinguished in just 27 minutes and there were no injuries. Two adults displaced from the three units impacted by the blaze chose to seek their own accommodations. Fire loss is estimated at $190,000 ($160,000 structure & $30,000 contents). The cause of the blaze is categorized as accidental and is attributed to a plumberís torch.
