    Canada-FF Killed (The Secret list)

Firefighter Chad Schapansky from Clearwater, Canada was killed Monday 3/29/04 after falling through a floor while operating inside of a restaurant fire. In an interesting note, one of the other firefighters inside the building had his cell phone and called 911 to help the exterior crews locate where he was inside. After the fire was knocked down, the firefighter who called 911 was located by other firefighters and transported with non-life-threatening injuries. However, tragically, FF Chad Schapansky was found in the building's basement, after apparently falling through the floor. As always, our deepest thoughts go out to the members of the Clearwater FD but especially to the family and friends of FF Chad Schapansky.

Of further note-carrying your cell phone in your bunker gear?... another good emergency backup tool to keep in mind if we get in trouble and the portable radio doesnít work well... or we donít have one.

    Take Care,
    BillyG

    YOUNGSTOWN, OH:

The Message Board of the Youngstown FD web site has an excellent "Apparatus Dictionary". The idea is to have photos of various styles of apparatus posted there so that it can be used as a reference. The photos already in the Apparatus Dictionary vary from early motorized apparatus to new deliveries.

Want to know what a 1939 Ahrens-Fox looks like? How about a Kenworth/Pierce, a Summit tanker or a Seagrave EMS patient transport engine? Don't see a topic for the type of apparatus you're looking for? Start a new category yourself or leave a photo request! Also, if you picture is smaller than 100 kb in size, it can be uploaded and stored on the YFD site.

Look for other features like the Virtual Swap Meet (post a free for sale or wanted ad for fire related item!) and the Fire Alarm Call Box Discussion. There are dozens of photo topics in the call box discussion showing unusual pieces of alarm equipment and photos of towns that are still using their dependable Gamewell systems! Have a picture of your favorite fire station, post it in the Fire Station topic where there old and new photos of stations from coast to coast. Many fire museums have photos and information listed on the site too.

Also, there are incident scenarios and a general firefighting discussion including an interesting new thread on enclosed pump compartments. Want to discuss a fire your town had recently or ask a "how would you do it question"? You can post notices about department fund raising events, parades or other events.

So, why not take a few minutes and have a look at the site? Maybe even register as a member and post a few pictures or comments! Stop in, say Hi! to everyone, and tell us what that nickname of yours means. It's fun and free....
