*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Thursday, April 01, 2004 at 1757 Hours (5:57 PM PST) nine Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and two Battalion Officer Command Teams under the direction of Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 2868 West 8th Street in Koreatown. The first Company on scene reported fire showing from the first floor of a residential fourplex converted to two-story medical care occupancy. Firefighters quickly forced entry into the 50 x 50 wood-frame and stucco building. Skillfully extending handlines, and bolstered by vertical ventilation made possible by their colleagues swift removal of skylights, Firefighters confined the flames to the first floor and extinguished the fire in just 18 minutes. There were no injuries. Loss to an un-named acupuncture clinic is estimated at $85,000 ($60,000 structure & $25,000 contents). The cause of this early evening blaze is categorized as electrical.

First weekend burns for Sydney's bushfire hazard reduction season

Twenty hazard reduction burns affecting over 3200ha will be conducted by NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and State Forests firefighters around Sydney and surrounding regions this weekend.

If weather permits, RFS volunteer firefighters will assist land owners with 14 burns, National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters will conduct five burns and State Forests plans one burn.

The areas targeted include Warringah, Pittwater, Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Gosford, Macarthur, Wingecarribee, Muswellbrook, Hawkesbury, Gloucester and Chifley.

``Although hazard reduction burns are conducted throughout the year when weather allows, this weekend signals a start to the traditional hazard reduction season which takes advantage of milder weather conditions,'' RFS Commissioner Phil Koperberg said.

``Weather this weekend is expected to be mild with low to moderate wind speeds, which is ideal for hazard reduction burning. However, burns may be cancelled if it rains, or if wind speeds are too high.

``These are strategically placed hazard reduction burns which are designed to assist with protection of homes, villages, farms, infrastructure and other environmental assets that are important to communities.

``It is not the number of hectares being burned that counts, but where the burns are placed that is important. Some of these burns are not designed to burn large areas but are right next to or near homes and other assets.

``Because of this there is a lot of time required to properly plan the burn and a significant demand on firefighting resources to make sure all goes smoothly.

``Hazard reduction burns are used to clear undergrowth and ground fuels in strategic areas of bushland. This work can assist in reducing the intensity of a bushfire should it occur in these areas. Hazard reduction burning cannot provide complete protection. It is one part of a number of bushfire management strategies, which also include community education programs to help people in bushfire prone areas to prepare their homes and families. ''
