It was breezy yesterday. I noticed a hawk running with the wind. Then, he turned into the wind and looked like he was standing still. Wings flared. Full colors. Majestic. Suddenly the hawk drops like a rock. Just above the grown he flares out and his talons grasp the next meal. Impressive!

I thought this can also relate to oral boards. You’re running with some basic questions in an oral. Then, the panel serves up a question that has your name written all over it. It’s a gift. You turn into the wind and hold waiting for the opportunity to deliver. You gather your thoughts and swoop into deliver the answer with your killer signature story that no body else can tell. The raters look up, put their pins down as you take them aloft on the journey that demonstrates you not only know the answer to this question you have earned your wings.

You know you have nailed it when one of the raters gives you just enough of that slight smile that has badge written all over it.

“Nothing counts ‘til you have the badge . . . Nothing!”
