ST. LOUIS, MO: City police hold suspect in 9 fires
    4/3/04

A suspect was arrested Saturday after a string of fires at nine buildings in St. Louis, including a spectacular warehouse blaze that spewed gray smoke over parts of downtown.

Police did not immediately file charges against the suspect, who was arrested near the last fire, which was reported shortly after 6 p.m. at 2909 James "Cool Papa" Bell Avenue. Six of the nine fires were the result of arson, St. Louis Fire Department spokeswoman Kim Bacon said.

Scores of firefighters battled the blazes, nearly all at abandoned buildings just northwest of downtown, said St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George. No one was injured in the fires, all reported over three hours within an 11-block area near Vashon High School.

The boldness of the apparent arsonist in Saturday's fire surprised authorities. The largest of the fires, at an abandoned warehouse, was within sight of a police station.

Battalion Chief Gerald Diefenbach said more than a hundred firefighters worked to control the blazes. He said the materials used to start the fires were probably consumed by the flames.

As his crew got one fire under control at an empty house on Garrison Avenue, clouds of thick, black smoke erupted from a warehouse burning a couple of blocks away at 1401 North Jefferson Avenue.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles.

"We could see it coming in from Illinois. We just followed the smoke all the way over here," said William Stevenson of St. Louis.

Fire Chief George said the rash of fires was the largest number he has handled at one time since five or six struck the McRee Town neighborhood in December. Fourteen fires occurred in a two-week period in the neighborhood, and a suspect was later arrested.

St. Louis is noted for the number of arson fires it records each year. In 1994, the city led the nation in arson fires and reported 585 in 2002, the most recent year for which FBI statistics were available.
