That's a pretty neat device; where did you get it?

    ThNozzleman,

It is issued by the job. Every Engine Company has one. I'm not sure but I think they are made by our tools guys.

I'm sure anyone that is handy with metal could build one that fits your hydrants. It has a t-handled screw and large wing nut like cap with rubber seal.

The metal work would be no problem; is that rubber piece something like a large bushing?

    Weruj1,

The t-screw goes in the barrel and the cap screws on the outside. The rubber provides a seal on the 2 1/2 outlet. We carry a few 2 1/2 Hydrant caps and if necessary we can cross thread them on but if that won't work...we can use this device.

Basicly the rubber is about 1/8th inch thick I think. It works quite well as long as the threads haven't had chunks taken out of them.

You under normal circumstances are not allowed to stick your hand in the hydrant for any reason...but as long as you are very careful and look first you can get away with it.

FFred is this a trick question - Does the hydrant even work or is it a lawn ornament

We have a adaptor that is like a pair of channel locks that we could use on the 2 1/2 to at least make it functional. We would have to put a cap on the steamer and other 2 1/2 if possible and the clamp would go over the other 2 1/2. We actually use it to go from Detroit threads to Standard threads (or is that vice versa ) but if you can get it to a couple of good threads it will work on anything.

Now that I have my new digi camera I will get a picture of it and post it.

it should be a simple case of one hydrant and a pair of 2 1/2 nozzles assuming you will be using the 4 1/2 and don't forget to flush out first

    lmrchief2,
No tricks here...it is a hydrant on the street in Manhattan. It has 1- Steamer conection and 1- 2 1/2 inch conection. (I know many of you have hydrants with 2- 2 1/2inch discharges). I'd be interested in seeing that channel lock thing.

ffkabes- You're right it should be simple...but Murphy often says it isn't. You are assuming the threads are workable. Also why place nozzles on there?

-Do you have that many nozzles to spare?
-Why not use a gated valve?

    Just something to think about.

Good thread, something I wouldn't normally think about.

Assuming there is no thread damage, the caps from our engine's discharges would be used on the 2 1/2 connections and the LDH adaptor on the steamer.

If we needed to use the 2 1/2 connections, we have a Stortz to 2 1/2" adaptor that we use for hose tests that we could put on the steamer.

As of now, if the threads were severely damaged we would have no choice but to move on to the next hydrant.

FFFred, is there any specs on that tool available anywhere?
