Or to expand on a thought - for new folks the search feature is very hard to use. I program computers & write web page code for a living and it took me almost 30 to 45 minutes to locate the threads I did using the FH search feature.

    Some issues I found:
    1) The search term you specified (top) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

    2) Searching for phrases like "Top Mount" or "Side Mount" isn't recognized / allowed (single or double quotes)

    3) A search for SIDE AND MOUNT AND TOP* returns no results in the A.I. forum

    4) A search for SIDE and MOUNT in the A.I. forum resulted 63 "matches". On the first page of 25 NONE were relevant

    5) A search for SIDE and MOUNT in the firefighting forum group resulted 68 "matches". On the first page of 25 only 3 were relevant (and 1 was in the explorers forum)

various other combinations of SIDE, TOP*, PANEL, and MOUNT searched in the Emergency Response forum group also resulted in zero matches.

My best results were obtained after switching from the default setting of "Search entire posts" to "Search Titles Only" which may also be hard for someone unfamiliar with the forums & the search feature.

I agree that a lot of us "Old Dogs" here get tired of seeing the same topics show up, but I also think we are too quick to toss out the "Use the Search" reply. We get lot's of new folks every week and those new folks may have new thoughts or ideas on "old" topics - no harm comes from letting them discuss them.

Also not really the best way to welcome someone new to the forums (First post).

My $.02 on the whole issue.

Anyhow. . . What I did manage to find:

From the Emergency Response Apparatus forums group:

I'm sure you will see after reading through some of those threads (and with further replies here) that both positions have their benefits and drawbacks and in the end your department will have to decide which works best for your specific situation based on those benefits & drawbacks.

    Lightbulb apples or oranges

As a primary structural firefighting vehicle, I like the top mount. It isolates the pump operator, and can give him a better view of the operation.

The negative? It adds about 2 feet to the wheelbase.

    Question

So does that mean rear-mount is tangerine? Would a quint be a pineapple or a banana? Corn? Nah, that's a vegetable.

    BBBOOOOOOOOOOO!! BAD JOKES!! BBOOOOOOO!!

Sorry, little punchy since I get to skip work for the next 2 days and go make a fact finding trip to an aerial factory. WHOOOHOOO! TOYS TOYS TOYS.

I would say that neither is the better. Takes your company at its procedures and then match up what works best for you all. There is nothing wrong with either location and both have their pro's and con's as do the rear mount.

    STILL STANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Actually, corn is a grain

I don't think any comparisons are valid unless you thrown in 1941 GMC midship with wooden ladders and leather helmets (and one tin drinking cup)vs 1995 Saulsbury rearmount vs 1990 Pierce Top Mount Vs E-One Bronto.

    Now we're talkin direct comparisons
