TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Permanent, Full-time
MAJOR DUTIES: Serves as a firefighter Emergency Medical
Technician-Defibrillator (EMT-D) at Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point. The
terminal accomplishes the movement of ammunition and other dangerous cargo. The
firefighter (EMT-D) serves as a member of a crew engaged in the protection of
life and property. Responds to and combats fires in wooded areas and on ships,
trains, trucks and structures which contain ammunitions, fuels, gases and
volatile chemicals. Serves as an Emergency Medical Technician-Defibrillator
assigned to an ambulance. Responds to fire alarms and emergency calls while on
duty as a member of a crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
Combats fires or rescues personnel on board ships where conditions create very
difficult and dangerous situations. Ships normally are loaded or being unloaded
with ammunition and other dangerous cargo. Also responds to fires and emergency
calls concerning woodlands, trains, trucks and structures that may contain
ammunition and other dangerous cargo. Drives and operates fire fighting and
rescue vehicles of significant complexity. Operates pumps, generators, nozzles
and other equipment. Serves in a standby capacity to provide fire and rescue for
a variety of situations to include helicopter landings and takeoffs, transfer of
hazardous material and control burning. Operates alarm room equipment, receives
calls and dispatches personnel and equipment. As necessitated by terminal
workload, on a rotational basis, perform vessel and structural inspections.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: This position requires one year of specialized
experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service.
Specialized experience is experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge,
skills and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Such duties may include 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an
organized military, industrial, volunteer, or government fire department or
brigade; 2) rescue operations; 3) detection, reduction, or elimination of
potential fire hazards; 4) operation of fire communications equipment; 5)
controlling hazardous materials incidents and /or 6) developing, implementing, or
providing training in fire protection and prevention.
The following certifications are the minimum qualifications for this position.
The certifications will be evaluated by the DoD Administration Center to grant
recognition of the validity of certifications gained by another institution.
Certification for: Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II, Hazardous Materials
Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Emergency Apparatus
Driver/Operator-Pump. Must possess valid certification as an Emergency Medical
Technician. Copies of all required certification (if not submitted, applicant
will be rated ineligible)
BASIS OF RATING: You will be rated on your basic qualifications as described by
you in your application and the extent and quality of your experience, education,
and/or training based on your responses to the Supplemental Qualifications
Statement (SQS). All responses you provide in the SQS may be subject to
verification against information in your basic application.
PAY, BENEFITS AND WORK SCHEDULE: Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer
(DD/EFT) is the standard method of payment within DoD for pay of personnel.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Under Executive Order 11935, only United States
citizens and nationals (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island) may
compete for civil service jobs. Agencies are permitted to hire noncitizens only
in very limited circumstances where there are no qualified citizens available for
the position. Applicants are required to state their country of citizenship in
their application/resume. Proof of citizenship will be required on appointment to
a civil service position.
MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE LIMIT: In accordance with Title 5, USC, 3307, the maximum entry
age for original appointment into a firefighter position is 37 years of age
unless previously employed in a covered Federal service position.

be subject to random drug testing.
Must be licensed as a Class B Non Commercial Drivers License.
Must obtain EMT-D certification within 12 months of employment as a condition of
employment. Employee will be terminated if fails to obtain certification within
the required time line. Certification will be at employees own time and expense.

somebody help me, I'm very new to this! I noticed in all government or federal jobs it says something like "This position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service" What is the GS-5 level?
