LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at 1637 hours (4:37 p.m.), thirty-five companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, six Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, the Tractor Company, Heavy Rescue 56, one Hazardous Materials Squad, and other support personnel, under the direction of Deputy Chief Mario Rueda, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 5930 South Wall Street in the South Los Angeles area. First units on the scene reported a large one-story, 250’ x 300’, metal clad commercial building with one of several occupancies with heavy smoke showing. Firefighters were able to ascertain that a fire was in one unit and was being held in check by the sprinkler system. Using handlines, heavy stream appliances and forcible entry tools, Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire that was imbedded deep in baled materials stacked ten to fifteen feet high and running the walls and attic. Very poor access to the seat of the fire greatly hindered Firefighters ability to completely extinguish the fire in the “Silver Star General Merchandise” occupancy. Several other units were damage as a result of the fire and a knockdown time and a dollar is not available. This report will be updated and corrected as additional information become available. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as under investigation.
