LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY BRUSH FIRE

On Thursday, May 6, 2004
at 1323 hours eighteen companies of Firefighters, two Battalion Command Teams, one EMS Battalion Captain, one Rescue Ambulance, four helicopters, two LACOFD Camp crews, one Supervisor and one Battalion Chief under the command of Assistant Chief Lawrence T. Krokes responded to a major emergency brush fire near the Southbound San Diego Freeway north of Mulholland Drive in the Encino Hills area. First units on scene reported several acres of light to medium grass burning slowly toward residential neighborhoods. A rapid deployment of resources plus water drops from the helicopters along with minimal winds and excellent brush clearance adjoining the neighborhoods lessened the potential danger to the structures. The fire was confined to approximately ten acres and extinguished in just forty-one minutes. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. The cause is under investigation.

Helping Our Own

"firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.

Please check out the following website - Maybe your FD can help out.

*** FireNet Group Of The Day: ***

CFN, Columbia Fire Net,
is a product of the Columbia, Missouri Fire Department. It was established to provide information via pagers to Chief Officers, Rescue and HazMat Team members and eventually to any interested CFD member. The pagers are provided at no cost to CFD members. With 4 pin options available, members could select any 2 additional types of pages. Obviously their individual pin, then a CFD all call pin and their choice of 2 more. About 2 dozen elected to receive CFN as one of their options. As of this writing there are 4 who are authorized to send out national pages. National paging will remain a very closely held authority. Since we are new, we have a rather steep learning curve. As Fire Chief, Wm. Markgraf is the nominal head of the system. The other 3 "national dispatchers" are employees of the CFD.

The telephone number for the Columbia Fire Department is 573 874 7391.
Home number for Darrin Arends is 573 687 3461.
E-Mail: dwa@gocolumbiamo.com
Personal Pager 499 8686

The CFD Web Page is: http://www.ci.columbia.mo.us which is the citywide page, then select the fire department.

Other dispatchers include Battalion Chief Ron McCord, Lieutenant Steve Sapp, and Engineer Dan McGavick. We sign by CFN/(and then our LAN identifications which is usually our initials.) For "snail mail" communications we may be reached at:

Columbia Fire Department,
