    LOS ANGELES, CA:
L.A. Mayor appoints new Fire Commissioner

From the Los Angeles Fire Department ( http://www.lafd.org )

Earlier today (May 11th), Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn appointed Verónica Gutiérrez to the City's Board of Fire Commissioners. The Fire Commission is a five person civilian Board appointed by the Mayor and affirmed by the City Council. Pursuant of the City Charter, these esteemed citizens provide direction to the Department through Fire Chief William Bamattre.

Verónica Gutiérrez serves as Director of Regulatory Compliance for Southern California Edison. Prior to her work for Edison, she served as an Economic Development Deputy for former Los Angeles City Councilmember Jackie Goldberg and as a Field Director for current Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. Ms. Gutiérrez is a Civil Rights attorney and worked for the law firm of Litt and Marquez, specializing in civil rights litigation. She managed cases involving Spanish-speaking clients in the areas of slum housing, police abuse, and employment discrimination.

Ms. Gutiérrez is a graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at University of California, Berkeley and received her A.B. from Princeton University. Gutiérrez replaces Fire Commissioner Corina Alarcon who has recently been appointed by Mayor Hahn to the Board of Police Commissioners. Both appointment are subject to City Council approval.
