*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
CIVILIAN FATALITY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at 0313 Hours (3:13 AM PDT), six Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and four Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of Assistant Chief Douglas Barry responded to a Civilian Fatality Structure Fire at 1200 South Longwood Avenue in the Mid-City area. The first Company arrived quickly to discover heavy smoke showing from a large two-story residential duplex. Firefighters deployed handlines to mount a tenacious interior assault against well-entrenched flames on the first and second floors as well as attic of the eighty year-old wood frame and stucco residence. The fire was skillfully confined to the structure of origin and extinguished in just 34 minutes During an exhaustive search that accompanied final extinguishment of the flames, Firefighters discovered the remains of a 96 year-old male in the heavily damaged kitchen area of the second floor unit. No other injuries were reported. The presence of hardwired Smoke Alarms was noted, though their functional status could not be immediately determined. Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated. A positive identification of the deceased, as well as the cause, manner and time of his death will be determined by Coronerís officials. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

FF's are The BIGGEST Complainers

In Warren, Michigan, it looks like 36 firefighters are going to lose their jobs. According to their Deputy Mayor (clearly a BIG fan of the FD there)...

"these cuts will not jeopardize public safety... the fire department is overstaffed and wasteful...," and our personal favorite, "the FIREFIGHTERS are the biggest complainers..."

We are not sure how the loss of 36 Firefighters and Paramedics CANNOT affect public safety... and like anywhere, there is probably some waste. But labeling firefighters as "the biggest" complainers? Now THAT is just plain mean.
