*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

5/23/04
LODD in Wales

Text from BBC News

A firefighter has died and two others have been injured after an explosion at a burning building in Cardiff. The dead man has not yet been named, but he was 29 and a father of two young children and lived in Bridgend. He was based at Barry and was a member of White Watch. Emergency services were called to a fire at a disused bingo hall and community centre on Bishopston Road in the Ely area of the city at 0110 BST. Crews were sent from Ely and Barry to tackle the blaze, and were on the scene within minutes. Mick Flanagan, the chief fire investigating officer, said the first firefighter went in with a hose and, almost as soon as he got into the building, there was an explosion and a fireball engulfed him, along with two colleagues who were standing outside. They were badly burned, but went inside to try and rescue their colleague. The two men fought to resuscitate him, but he was found to be dead on arrival at hospital. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "An explosion occurred which injured three firefighters, one seriously. He subsequently died of his injuries." The other two - one who lives in Ely and one from Barry - were released from hospital after treatment. The area around the building - which had been empty for about a year - has been sealed off so that the scene of the fire can be examined. Residents from the area said half of the building had been completely destroyed by fire, and the other half was seriously damaged. They said gangs of youths often gathered around the site, and there had been speculation as to whether the fire was started deliberately. An investigation by the fire service and the police forensic teams is currently being carried out. Haydn Harries, who lives nearby said he was woken by the blaze. "I could hear this crackling and banging as if someone was letting off fireworks in the street," he said. "I came out to have a look and the old community hall, which is all wood, was on fire. "It was a shock to hear there was a fireman caught in that explosion."
