Does anyone's jurisdiction have an ordinance requiring both a smoke detector and CO monitor in either a new or existing SFD ? and if so could you email me a copy or phone number or something to get a copy of it? Our City Council is considering this and I need some input and vernacular about how to go about. Any problems with it ? thanks ...

We do not have one but it sounds like a good idea.

Re: Of smoke and CO.........
How is it going to be enforced? How is compliance going to be checked? When you go on an EMS run, are you going to ask everyone to see their detectors and check to make sure they work? Not knocking it, just unsure. I think it's a good idea for the smoke detector, not sure on the CO, though......... at least in existing dwellings.Originally posted by Weruj1

I have heard of the smoke detectors being required in some areas. Without one NO OCCUPANCY permit is issued. Strictly new homes but I think I also heard of a area north of us that when you put a house up for sale the city must inspect it first and you have to have a smoke detector in that situation also.
You just need the building inspetor to do his job that is all you really need. Oh and of course the rule on the books

I'm going through this right now, I live in Wheaton IL and I am trying to build a house.
They require 110V smoke with battery back up and CO detectors on every level of the house. A homeowner when building or remodeling can't get occupancy without the detectors.

'77 .......the mandatory smokoe detector thing was decided by City Council, and then "they" heard of someplace in NY that also added the CO detectors. So I am merely asking for my Chief so he can get some info on the situation. In terms of enforcement, there could be a law about the city inspecting before any permits are issued on any new or existing homes or construction.

Weruj, FYI, I believe per the county building code, you are required to have direct wire smoke detectors, with a battery backup. So anytime someone is doing major renovations or new construction, they must be installed in order to pass the inspection.........

In Massachusetts, smoke detector inspections take place upon the sale of a home (Mass. General Laws, chapter 148, section 26). For new construction, the placement and number of detectors required in residential dwellings falls under the 6th edition of the Massachusetts Building Code.
At this point, CO detectors are a local option."The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

When I closed on my house both the seller and myself were required to sign a document saying that the house had a working CO detector and smoke detectors on all floors, that is about the only way to enforce the code that I know. This was in NY

NJ Div Fire Safety on CO Detectors Weruj1, here is a doc from the NJ Division of Fire Safety about having CO detectors. I know in my town, a CO detector is now required for SFD when sold. There are no inspections after that point unless the FD notices they are not present.
