LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE
On Monday, May 31, 2004 at 1018 hours eight companies of Firefighters, two Chief Officer Command Teams and two Rescue Ambulances under the direction of Battalion Commander Gary Clark responded to a greater alarm structure fire at 1430 W. 11th Street in the Westlake area. First units on scene reported a large two-story Victorian converted to a four-plex with smoke showing. Firefighters using handlines confined the fire to the attic and extinguished the fire in eighteen minutes. No injuries were reported. The cause was combustibles too close to the water heater in one unit and the loss was estimated at $115,000. ($75,000 to structure and $40,000 to contents).

Primary search is in - progress. Heavy smoke condition on the fire floor. Truck's are "Opening Up" Fire is Doubtful at this time.
Batt. 44: Box 1689, Still using the All - Hands. 2 - lines stretched, 1 - line in operation. Had a mattress fire in the hallway. Fire has been knocked down. Probably Will Hold.

1811 - Newburyport - MA - 250 buildings and shops destroyed in most prominent section of town - Fire started on Inn Street in the center of downtown by an arsonist - Baptist Meeting House in Market Square, where many well to do citizen had placed their belongings to be safe from the fire, was in turn destroyed when strong winds shifted - Amesbury, Rowley, Danvers, Ipswich, Beverly, Haverhill, Topsfield, Bradford, and Salem assisted in fighting fire
1939 (Tuesday-Memorial Day) - Sandwich - NH - Upper Road - old Jesse Mudgett farm - Hay fire in barn destroys barn and house (I Have two b&w photos of this fire) - Jesse Mudgett had quite an infamous ancestor - xxxx Mudgett was known as the first mass murderer in the United States in the late 1800's, doing most of his dirty deeds centered around the Chicago's World Fair
