*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE

On Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 1547 hours ten companies of Firefighters, three Rescue Ambulances, two Chief Officer Command Teams and one EMS Battalion Captain responded to a greater alarm structure fire at 20954 Vanowen Street in the Canoga Park area. First unit on scene reported a three-story apartment over parking with the smell of smoke in one unit on the third floor. After a comprehensive investigation to determine the source of the smoke, a fire ignited from a smoldering sub-floor fire in an upstairs bedroom and extended to the adjacent bedroom before it was extinguished in one hour and four minutes. Two Firefighters received minor injuries. One suffered a second-degree burn to one ear and the other acquired a minor groin pull. Both were transported to Sherman Oaks Community Hospital in stable condition. Two adults and three children were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The cause was determined to be a terrarium heat lamp that had fallen onto the carpet, burned through and into the sub-floor. The loss was estimated at $50,000. ($30,000 to structure and $20,000 to contents).
