LOS ANGELES, CA:
INVESTF (ILLEGAL FIREWORKS)


On Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 1205 hours (12:05 p.m.) fifteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five Battalion Officer Command Teams, one Urban Search and Rescue team, three Battalion EMS Supervisors, six LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Arson Unit, and other support personnel, under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard A. Warford, responded to an illegal fireworks investigation at 808 North Spring Street in the China Town area. First units on the scene were informed that an extremely large cache of illegal fireworks could be found on the upper floors of the nine-story commercial building. Further investigation by the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department discovered approximately two tons of illegal fireworks on the seventh and eight floor of the building. An immediate evacuation of the building and adjacent buildings were ordered and the area was cordoned off as a safety precaution. Over 250 people were evacuated. The Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad assisted by the Los Angeles Fire Department removed the fireworks to a safe location for disposal. No injuries were reported and the incident is under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
