    Post Phosgene....from a vending machine?

Texas vending machine explodes, creates poison gas
HOUSTON, June 24 (Reuters) - An exploding vending machine
turned the coolant freon into phosgene, a poisonous gas used as
a chemical weapon in World War One, and forced the evacuation
of 10 people from a Texas hospital, officials said on
    Thursday.
A food service employee was working on the refrigerated
soft drink machine at the Park Place Medical Center in Port
Arthur, Texas, when a small explosion and fire occurred inside
it on Wednesday morning, Port Arthur Fire Marshal Mark Mulliner
    said.
"When freon gas from the cooling system came into contact
with the heat from the fire, it changed composition to a
    phosgene gas," Mulliner said.
Phosgene irritates the lungs, eyes, mouth and nose and, in
strong enough concentrations, causes fatal amounts of fluid to
    build up in the lungs.
Ten people on the third floor of the hospital were
evacuated for several hours while the area was ventilated, said
Heather Ross of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Two firefighters were kept in the hospital overnight for
    observation, Ross said.
"We were fortunate one of our officers who was first on the
scene had some familarity with phosgene and quickly evacuated
    the area," Mulliner said.
Ross said state Homeland Security officials had to be
notified of the incident because of phosphene's possible use as
    a chemical weapon.
Mulliner said the incident appeared to be a "freak
    accident."
"I've been here 27 years and I've never seen anything like
    this," he said.

Its amazing the chemistry you can perform in your own home isnt it? Simple chemicals can be used to make Methamphetamines, freon and fire make Phosgene. Next thing you know they will tell you that you can make your own napalm! Kidding of course.

Ships at sea in particular run this hazard, which really makes a strong case for use of SCBA.

Canadian Navy ships still use CHEMOX units for shipboard FFing and a smaller hooded version for emergency evac (EEBAs), with a max 15 min time limit. Unfortunately both units create a great deal of external heat, which we all know (now ) reacts very badly with freon. The only spaces on the ship that did not have the EEBAs were in the refridgeration spaces.

I'm just glad that no one was seriously hurt in the afore mentioned incident, becasue phosgene exposure is usually an unrecoverable injury.

Isn't that what you get when you mix tequila, rum, JD or vodka with Jello?

Hahaha. No. There is only ONE cupcake and believe me, it isn't you. I won't say who, but if you do a search for "Cupcake", you'll figure it out pretty fast.

President Bush has sent a bill to Capitol hill this week asking Congress for $93 trillion dollars for the war on people who use soft drink machines. In other news Halaburton has been named ruler of Iraq and the FIRE act grants have been cut by another $230 million.

Due to homeland security concerns, refrigerated vending machines are banned effective immediately.

To accomplish this, all machines will be replaced by 24x7 staffing of a person manning an ice chest and cash register. The staffing of cold convience food delivery stations, construction of ice plants, distribution of ice, and other ancilliary services are hereby awarded to Haliburton on a no-bid cost-plus basis.

Did I miss something? Has hwoods started hanging out with cellblock?!?

Edited to add a serious note:

Thanks for posting the story. Phosgene is something we all got (I assume) introduced to in FFI but it is far from the first thing I would have thought about if dispatched to a 'vending machine fire'.

Just another example of the many, many things that can get us in a serious mess.
