ACCIDENT -- Two 20-year-old women were taken to hospitals Monday morning after a sports utility vehicle ran a red light and crashed into their small passenger car.

A man was driving an SUV on 800 West in Orem at 9 a.m. and made a left turn onto University Parkway on a red light just as the car carrying the women started to head east.

He smashed into the car, pinning the driver of the car. The driver had to be extracted from the car using the jaws of life and was then flown to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City with serious injuries. The passenger was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with head, neck and back pain. The driver and passengers in the other car had no injuries.

Westbound University Parkway was shut down for 25 minutes, with traffic being diverted through Utah Valley State College.
