A house fire and police standoff left one man dead, this morning.

Salt Lake County authorities recieved a call about a house fire in Magna just before nine AM.

Fire crews couldn't fight the blaze because an elderly man inside was firing shots.

Police believe he started the fire then barricaded himself in the basement.

Several blocks of 3500 South were roped off and residents were evacuated.

Neighbors say the man was unstable...

Scott McGinnis/Nephew of upstairs resident: "MY AUNT DOESN'T REALLY KNOW HIM, BUT MY DAD SAYS HE'S CRAZY, AND HAS ALWAYS KNOWN HE WAS CRAZY. I GUESS HE GOT IN A CONFRONTATION A LITTLE BIT AGO."

After failed attempts to communicate, the SWAT team burst in.

They found the man dead.

Authorities are still investigating the cause and motive behind the fire and his death.

There were no other injuries.
