Fatality Report (The Secret list)

The NIOSH report is out on the fire that tragically killed Carthage, MO Firefighter Steve Fierro. You can check the NIOSH site as well as our News/Updates area on the home page of www.FirefighterCloseCalls.com for an article and additional information.

One thing that drew our attention in the report is that an available thermal-imaging camera was apparently not used by rescuers who made several heroic attempts to locate Fierro once it was realized he was missing.

This isn't the first time that a TIC was either forgotten about or not readily available... we have certainly done it ourselves several times as well. One thing we have pondered is the fact that the TIC is "just one more thing" to bring with us-and sometimes we run out of hands-or have limited staffing-or simply forget. TIC's are so frick'n important and valuable that we need to figure out a way to make sure they always end up inside with us-all the time. The new light weight "clip on your helmet" style TIC giving FF's hands free options is excellent and provides numerous opportunities for FF's to have full use of their hands... while still thermal imaging. Or, for the hand held TIC's, they need to be somewhere on the apparatus so they are visible and can be grabbed and won't be forgotten by the crew. The less we have to carry or remember-the better... but no matter what... the TIC is a great tool that we gotta have inside with us all the time.

As always, our deepest respect goes out to the families-but also to the FF's and Officers who were there-and still have to deal with this tragic event.

Take Care,
BillyG
