No Charges Filed in Controlled Burn That Destroyed Home
Jul. 8, 2004
(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Firefighters won't face criminal charges in a controlled burn that destroyed a home in Minersville last month.

The fire on June 9 was supposed to be a controlled burn of weeds near an 83-year-old woman's home. But shortly after firefighters left the area, flames spread to the home and destroyed it.

The Beaver County attorney decided not to file charges against the five volunteer firefighters after talking with the homeowner, who says they were just trying to help her.

The county attorney says instead of charges, the firefighters should receive additional training, apologize to the homeowner, and pay restitution if insurance does not cover all the costs, estimated at 154-thousand dollars. But if they don't comply, the county attorney could decide to file charges.
