'Foolish' criminal wrecked real cash to make counterfeit

CALGARY -- A 19-year-old man who destroyed $160 worth of real money to make some poorly done counterfeit bills avoided jail Wednesday, thanks to a sympathetic judge.
"I accept this was a foolish, ill-conceived, poorly thought-out prank," provincial court Judge Allan Fradsham said in handing Jason James Cremer more than $850 in fines and a criminal record.
What made the case bizarre was that Cremer and a youth produced the bills on a computer, with non-watermarked commercial paper and an inkjet printer.
They then cut the optical security devices (hologram) from the real money, glued them to the bogus bills -- and threw the real ones away.
They were arrested after staff at a Calgary bar discovered the funny money.
"It was a youthful enthusiasm, more akin to a prank than a money-making enterprise," defence lawyer Charlie Stewart told the judge. "This was an attempt to see if he could get away with it."
