    Talking First Fire!

Well after many years my goal to become a firefighter is slowly coming together. Last night was my first "official" practice with my fire department and it just happened to be the perfect weather conditions to burn one of our departmentís old buildings down. I got my first lessons in PPE, ladders, and accountability. Once I had my new turnout gear adjusted I joined my Lieutenant and our job was to vent the roof (before it was lit). My team ended up venting with an axe (never know when the k-12 or chainsaw won't start...) Once the roof was vented the chief lit her. I was surprised at how fast the fire spread (we used NO accelerants). We staged four 1.5 inch lines around the building and a deluge gun to cover the exposure. (Due to the nature of the building this was only a defensive activity, no one could enter the building.) The fire spread rather quickly to the front of the building and we were needed to help keep the flames down to a controllable level. It was really something to actually be on a hose. After the building collapsed it was my turn to be on the nozzle. As the fire burned down I got my lesson in post fire clean up. I was shocked at how much time it takes to wash and roll hose! We ended the night eating subs and relaxing as the fire slowly burned out. It was an awesome experience. I cannot wait to start my formal schooling in a few weeks.

Probies? Heck, if you get creative enough you can even get the senior FFs to have to buy it once in awhile, but they can't get away with fudgecicles or something...it's got to be the gourmet stuff!
