LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA:

It is with deep regret that I announce the line-of-duty death of Fire Captain Daniel Elkins, of Fire Station 117 in Lancaster. Captain Elkins, who was 47 years old, was en route to the Antelope Valley from the Pine Incident brushfire in the Lake Hughes area when he was involved in a single-vehicle accident. He was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Captain Elkins, who lived in the Quartz Hill area of Los Angeles County, was a 20-year veteran of LACoFD, appointed to the Department in October, 1983. He is survived by his wife and his two adult children. This is a painful loss for our Department, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

P. MICHAEL FREEMAN, FIRE CHIEF
LOS ANGELES COUNTY FIRE DEPT.

-----

As always, our deepest sadness and prayers go out to the family of Captain Elkins, especially his Wife and Children and to
the members of the Los Angeles County F.D.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY BRUSH FIRE:

On Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at 1532 hours (3:32 p.m.), twenty-four companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, five Battalion Officer Command Teams, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, one Arson Team, three LAFD helicopters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance, one Glendale Fire Company, LA County Camp Crews, and other support personnel, under the direction of Assistant Chief John Ware, responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire in the Griffith Park area near Mineral Wells Road. First units on the scene reported approximately three acres of brush burning in steep terrain on a hillside near the burn of a previous fire on July 12, 2004. Firefighters using handlines and helicopter water drops confined the fire to approximately ten acres of medium and heavy brush and extinguished the fire in two hours and eleven minutes. A number of children were evacuated from the Griffith Park Boys Camp as a safety precaution. No homes were threatened by the fire and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is listed as under investigation.
