Utah Smurfit-Stone Fire Determined to Be Arson

SALT LAKE CITY, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Vido, Special Agent in Charge
for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National
Response Team, Steve Foote, Fire Chief for South Salt Lake City, Utah, and
Theresa Garner, Police Chief for South Salt Lake City, Utah, today announce
that the 6 alarm fire that occurred July 16, 2004 at the Smurfit-Stone
Packaging Plant was intentionally set and has been ruled an arson.
ATF Special Agent/Certified Fire Investigators and South Salt Lake City
Fire Investigators have concluded, after a comprehensive examination of the
fire scene, that arson was the source of the blaze. Burn patterns, the
progression of the fire, and interviews conducted by investigators supported
the conclusion.
"I commend the exceptional job of the South Salt Lake City Fire Department
in containing the fire and the joint investigative efforts of the police and
fire departments," said ATF Special Agent in Charge Vido.
The examination results have been turned over to the local ATF office and
the South Salt Lake City Fire and Police Departments who will conduct a joint,
