I'm 19 and live in SC. I have been a volunteer firefighter for about four and a half years. Since I have been on I have always wanted to got to FDNY I have been to the website and read all the information about the hiring and application process. My question is, what would be the the best action for me to take? I would hate to leave everything behind to go up ther and not be able to live my dream, but on the other hand, it's something I really want. Any advice??

I'll tell you what I would do brother, is apply to take the next test which I think is in Ocotber 2006. See how you do. If you do well on your physical and get a good list #, I would move down and try it out. I am pretty sure you have to live in the 5 boroughs, Long Island, Putnam, Westchester, Orange, Rockland Counties, 1 year before you are hired. I am not 100%, but I am pretty sure thats how it works. Maybe someone could help you out a little better. Good Luck and let us all know how you make out. Its the best job in the world. Hopefully I'll be on soon.

Go back and re-read the FAQ.
You DO NOT need to be a resident of anywhere to take the test.
You DO get 5 extra points on the test if you are a resident of the 5 Boros at the time of examination.
You DO need to be a resident(of city or certian surrounding counties) to be sworn in (about 1 week before your academy class would begin.)
The next test will be in about 1 1/2 2 years. Apply and take it.
If you take the open competive exam and do well 100/100, perhaps join the NYPD. This starts your city time and the pay scale is essentially the same. That way when the Fire Dept calls you already have a few years toward your pension and you aren't starting out at 6th Grade pay.
