PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) - Four Fire Explorers who were honored by
the Coral Springs Commission in May have been charged in a rash of
auto burglaries, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
A fifth teen, who is not an Explorer, also was charged in the
Parkland burglaries.
The teens, ages 15 to 17, were arrested last week, charged with
multiple counts of burglary of a conveyance. All were released to
their parents.
Deputies caught the teens with a stash of cell phones, palm
pilots, speakers and radios worth about $15,000. They also had a
Broward County Fire Rescue jacket, protective gloves, fire boots
and a bag of medical supplies that had been reported stolen from a
Broward fire rescue vehicle, the sheriff's office said.
"These were all good kids," Coral Springs Fire Chief Donald
Haupt Jr. told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "They just got in
with the wrong group."
The four Explorers were honored after their team placed second
overall in the annual Fire Rescue Explorer Challenge. The teams
competed in such things as hose rolling, first aid and bucket
brigade.
"These are fine young men and women who are augmenting their
education with positive and rewarding part-time activity," a city
commission report said.
Haupt said the four teens have been suspended from the
Explorers.
The Coral Springs Fire Explorers Post has about 50 members. It
is a member of Learning for Life, South Florida, a subsidiary of
the National Boy Scout organization.

Four Louisiana Firefighters Accused Of Setting Blazes
Associated Press
COTEAU, La. (AP) -- Four volunteer firefighters have been accused of intentionally starting fires. Authorities said they claimed they were bored and wanted some action.
The four, who are members of the Coteau Volunteer Fire Department, were arrested Monday and booked with simple arson. They were identified as Martin LeBlanc, 18, Joshua Bourque, 17, Dustin LeBouef, 17, and a 16-year-old juvenile whose name was not made public because of his age.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Erik Feller said a warrant also was issued for a fifth person, a former member of the department.
Feller said the arrests stemmed from four fires, including three over the past five weeks. He said the men were caught following the most recent fire on July 23, when 15 bales of hay caught fire in Coteau.
``When the first fire engine arrived on scene, the juvenile told one of the paid firefighters it took two times to get the fire going,'' Feller said.
The other fires involved bales of hay and two abandoned houses.
``They said they were bored, and they were looking for some action,'' Feller said. ``It's not very often, but we do see that every now and then where firefighters are setting them.''
Fire Chief Sam Bird said junior firefighters range from 14 to 18 years of age and are primarily support personnel.
``They don't actually fight fires,'' he said. ``The ironic thing was they said they wanted some action, but all they can really do is stand around and watch.''
