*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:

CIVILIAN FATALITY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Monday, August 09, 2004 at 0454 Hours (4:54 AM PDT), four Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance and LAFD fire cause Investigators under the direction of 13th Battalion Commander Michael Rhodes responded to a Civilian Fatality Structure Fire at 10615 South Compton Avenue in Watts. An in-service Fire Company, searching for a possibly unrelated call observed smoke at a distance and responded to find a shed to the rear of a single family home well involved with fire. Firefighters cut a chain link fence that completely surrounded both the vacant home and shed, and then forced entry through a chained and locked screen protection door securing the 15í x 20í wood frame and stucco outbuilding constructed on a raised foundation. In less than five minutes, Firefighters fully extinguished the flames, confining the fire to the structure of origin, which held no evidence of a functional smoke alarm. During the brisk and well-coordinated fire attack, Firefighters discovered an adult female within the structure. Without vital signs of life, the approximately 30 year-old woman was declared deceased at the scene. There were no other injuries. Monetary loss from the fire is estimated at $8,000 ($7500 structure & $500 contents). The cause of this early morning blaze remains under active investigation.

CIVILIAN FATALITY AT VEGETATION FIRE:

On Monday, August 09, 2004 at 1617 Hours (4:17 PM PDT), four Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and an LAFD fire cause Investigation Team under the direction of 14th Battalion Commander Evan Williams responded to a Civilian Fatality at the scene of a Vegetation Fire alongside the Ventura Freeway at Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood. The first Company arrived quickly to discover smoke emanating from a thicket of oleander bushes along the southbound freeway onramp. Quickly extending a hoseline into the dense foliage, they discovered an adult male lying on the ground surrounded by smoldering vegetation. Despite Firefighters quick response and extinguishment of the blaze, the man was found to have no vital signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Los Angeles Police and Highway Patrol Officers commenced a preliminary joint investigation. Coronerís officials will investigate the circumstances in an effort to determine the manís identity as well as the cause, manner and time of his death.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH:

The Message Board of the Youngstown FD web site has an excellent "Apparatus Dictionary". The idea is to have photos of various styles of apparatus posted there so that it can be used as a reference. The photos already in the Apparatus Dictionary vary from early motorized apparatus to new deliveries.

Want to know what a 1939 Ahrens-Fox looks like? How about a Kenworth/Pierce, a Summit tanker or a Seagrave EMS patient transport engine? Don't see a topic for the type of apparatus you're looking for? Start a new category yourself or leave a photo request! Also, if you picture is smaller than 100 kb in size, it can be uploaded and stored on the YFD site.

Look for other features like the Virtual Swap Meet (post a free for sale or wanted ad for fire related item!) and the Fire Alarm Call Box Discussion. There are dozens of photo topics in the call box discussion showing unusual pieces of alarm equipment and photos of towns that are still using their dependable Gamewell systems! Have a picture of your favorite fire station, post it in the Fire Station topic where there old and new photos of stations from coast to coast. Many fire museums have photos and information listed on the site too.

Also, there are incident scenarios and a general firefighting discussion including an interesting new thread on enclosed pump compartments. Want to discuss a fire your town had recently or ask a "how would you do it question"? You can post notices about department fund raising events, parades or other events.

So, why not take a few minutes and have a look at the site? Maybe even register as a member and post a few pictures or comments! Stop in, say Hi! to everyone, and tell us what that nickname of yours means. It's fun and free....
