I live in Ocala, fl going for my Paid Paramedic/FF and what i dont understand is that, here in florida, they love the sunshine and racing, so.........
why doesn't florida have firefighting racing drills?
http://fdracing.com/intro/index.htm
i think it would make a great show of skills b/c here in florida its sunshine 99% of the time with 70 degrees all year long! ! !
btw: i'm from Hicksville, Ny (it's in the bld i guess)

its very cool in person to watch all the teams, and its a fun day meeting other companies
[go to www.fdracing.com and look for "links" at the bottom; it'll show you all the teams except Hicksville VFD b/c they are rebuilding their site]Last edited by NYI4LIFE; 08-28-2004 at 12:13 AM.

It was a lot of fun when they ran these competitions on
Feb. 22nd. Don't remember any sunshine and 70 degrees then.

Different Strokes.............
Yeah, We got that. (Thanks, Staples) Or should I say we have something somewhat similar. Our Annual County Convention has two days worth of things to do. Catch is, we do not have any "Racing Rigs" we use our apparatus right out of the station. Couple of examples: Auto Extracation Contest. You Stabilize the Auto, remove all 4 doors, remove the top, and do a dash roll. Winning Times are in the 5 - 6 Minute area. my favorite, "Running Hookup". Engine is parked, shut down, 250 feet from the Hydrant. 8 man team runs 50 feet and boards the apparatus, except the guy who turns on the hydrant (usually me) who runs all the way. Engine drives to the hydrant, hooks up a hard suction sleeve, gets water, runs a 150 2.5 line w/nozzle, charges line, stream from nozzle knocks target over. We've won this one with a time of 28 SECONDS! And there are about a dozen others. It's fun. No special vehicles, no special tools, just everyday people and Apparatus.
Never use Force! Get a Bigger Hammer.

In my captain's words "We don't care how you do it up North".
While racing is fun and a good team building sport, I think time could be better spent on the drill field trying to keep firefighters safe by training. There are old fashion tournemnets in florida and several departments in the bigger cities have combat challenge teams.
The combat challenge is billed as the toughest 2 minutes in sports and its fun to watch, no rainouuts either.
